You and I Against the World

A new, more fitting blog title (inspired by Marlowe out sprinting me at full speed one night this week) and a new favorite song, Love and Affection, from Matt White, featured on the Bachelorette:

Update: And a free download of the song here.

Guess I’ll be waiting for the time and I’m sayin that I’m ready to come back home.

While the world seems so crazy and you’re angry and I tell you this is right for your soul.

All our friends are gettin married and they’re happy and they’re sappy even though they might be feeling so old.

And when I’m feeling so lonely you tell me that you love me just for my soul and then I say.

I will offer you love and affection and all of my warmth and protection.

It is just you and I against the world.

And fallin down she said she’ll cry for me, I don’t know what I said to cause attention.

And all the problems with the money is so funny cause I don’t care bout it, nothin at all.

Oh, we came together, we were lovin on the table, we were lovin on the floor, we were lovin where it’s able.

And all the words and the wild nights that we spent and the spoonin and the fire, then you look at me and I’ll say..

I will offer you love and affection and all of my warmth and protection.

It will be you and I against the world. I will be there, it’ll be you and I against the world.

Let’s spend the days doing nothing, nothin to say or worry. This could be starting somethin, don’t have to end this story, oh.

I will offer you love and affection and all of my warmth and protection. It is just you and I against the world. Oh, tell me baby, it is just you and I against the world.

Oh, oh, will you tell me, it is just you and I against the world?

I am not the first person you loved. You are not the first person I looked at with a mouthful of forevers. We have both known loss like the sharp edges of a knife. We have both lived with lips more scar tissue than skin. Our love came unannounced in the middle of the night. Our love came when we’d given up on asking love to come. I think that has to be part of its miracle.

This is how we heal. I will kiss you like forgiveness. You will hold me like I’m hope. Our arms will bandage and we will press promises between us like flowers in a book. I will write sonnets to the salt of sweat on your skin. I will write novels to the scar of your nose. I will write a dictionary of all the words I have used trying to describe the way it feels to have finally, finally found you.

And I will not be afraid of your scars.

I know sometimes it’s still hard to let me see you in all your cracked perfection, but please know: whether it’s the days you burn more brilliant than the sun or the nights you collapse into my lap your body broken into a thousand questions, you are the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. I will love you when you are a still day. I will love you when you are a hurricane. - Clementine von Radics, Mouthful of Forevers
